Beypore Beach, Kozhikode |
You will be drawn to the old-world charm of Beypore Beach. About 1500 years ago, Beypore enjoyed world-wide fame for its ship-building industry. Traders especially Arabs visited the place frequently to purchase the traditional vessel Uru, carved and shaped out of teak and jackfruit timber by the skilled craftsmen, Mappila Khalasis. It takes about 50 men and at least a year to get a boat ready. Today, the locals continue this tradition. And the boat-building yard is still as busy as it was then. Apart from this, the port was one of the major fishing harbours enjoying immense importance in trade and maritime history of Kerala. Beypore is 11 km south of Kozhikode just about 30 minutes drive. It is one of the most popular tourist haunts near the city. Once you are there, you will know why. The place is bewitching and relaxing. Immerse yourself in the peace and serenity of Beypore, hug the warm rays of the sun and gaze into the vast blue expanse of the Arabian Sea. Saunter down the bridge that runs nearly 2 km into the sea and enjoy listening to the gurgling waves. Choose a spot and watch the sun set at the horizon. Locally called Pulimoodu, the bridge is made up of huge stones and rocks piled together. After this walk, you will surely be tempted for more of the water. So fulfil your desire by taking a Uru ride in the sea under the expert guidance of a local fisherman. And while you are out at sea, do not miss the chance of your maiden attempt at fishing. For the adventurous lot, there are quite a few water sports facilities also. Make your trip even more interesting; take a nature tour at the Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary. It is very close, just 7 km from beach. It would be a shame to miss it because the Kadalundi estuary is a famed birdies haven. During February-March, migratory birds flock here in large numbers creating a beautiful sight and sounds. Other times, you will also find plenty of local birds such as herons, gulls, terns and sandpipers. Locally called Kadalundi Nagaram, the sanctuary sprawls over a group of islands and almost enclosed by a hillock. It is here that the Kadalundi River drains into the Arabian Sea. As for accommodation, there are numerous luxury and budget hotels available at Kozhikode. To tend to your gastronomic pangs, there are plenty of seaside food stalls. They serve fresh seafood with a touch of local favour that it bound to make you want for more. Drain your meal down with a sip of some sweet tender coconut water. |
