Regarded as the granary of Kerala, Palakkad or Palghat is situated at the foot of the western Ghat, on the border of Kerala and Tamilnadu. Located 80 km away from Trichur, the district of Palakkad is blessed with valleys, hillocks, rivers, forests, mountain streams, dams, and irrigation projects. It has got its name from the Malayalam word Pala (Aisteria scholars) and Kadu (forest) which literally means a place covered with the flowers of dense Pala tree. Major tourist attractions Palakkad Fort- it is one of the most remarkable forts of Kerala, tells the story of Subjugation and surrender. Located amidst the town, the fort was built by Haider Ali, the Sultan of Mysore in 1766, later modified by his son Tipu Sultan. The fort reflects French style of architectures since it was built under the leadership of French Engineer. Malampuzha- located just 13 km from the town, Malampuzha is known as 'The Vrindavan of Kerala. After the completation of the Dam in 1955, the place emerges as a major tourist destination. It is home to several gorgeous gardens in which Mughal style garden, Japani style garden are important. Apart from these attractions, Fish-shaped aquarium, the Snake garden, the Rock Garden, the Amusement park, the Fancy Park and thrilling rides are other enchanting visiting places. Silent valley National Park- located in the Palakkad district in Kerala, the park covers an area of 90 sq km. it is the perfect destination for wildlife travelers, provides shelter to many endangered mammals, reptiles and avian life. According to a survey the park is home to more than 1000 species of trees. Nelliampathy- located just 75 km from Palakkad; it is one of the most beautiful hill resorts of the state. The height of the hill deviates from 467 to 1572 meters which makes it a perfect destination for seekers of Adventures. Further it offers a fantastic sight seeing from the naked peaks of Western Ghat. Kudallur and Thasarak- they are the cultural destination of the district which became background of several famous writers and novelist such as M.T.Vasudevan Nair and O.V. Vijayan. These writers in their novels have mentioned the country folk and culture.
