Periyar Tours

Kerala, the Green paradise on Earth, is bestowed with wide range of tourist attractions and no other state of India can compete with it in terms of natural flora and fauna. Periyar wildlife sanctuary is situated on the banks of the Periyar Lake-an artificial lake, at Thekkady. Thekkady or Periyar is the perfect shelter for fauna and flora as well as for the Mannas, Palians and Ooralie tribes who still live in traditional way. The mesmerizing park is situated at an altitude of 1800 meters.

Periyar boasts of wide variety of vegetation. Here you can find more than 1800 flowering plants including 171 grass species and 143 species of orchids. Rain forest, grass like vegetation, broad leafed plants are the major flora of the sanctuary. Orchids, rosewood, teakwood, bamboo, eucalyptus and ferns dominate the vegetation of the park. It is also a home to more than 350 species of medical plants.

The park is blessed with diverse fauna of the park. You can explore here more than 35 varieties of endangered species of mammals, which include especially wild Elephant, tiger, panther, wild dog, Sambar, Barking Deer, Wild Boar, Sloth Bear, Malabar Gaint Squirrel, Leopard and Nilgiri Langur. Several species of reptiles includes King cobra, Viper, Krait, a number of non poisonous Snakes, lizards, Bi-colored Frogs, Tortoise and Crocodiles.

As far as avian life is concerned, it is an ideal destination for avian life which includes More than 320 species of rare birds such as The great Indian Hornbill, Peafowl, Brahminy kite and black - Winged Kite; aquatic birds Like Darter, Little Cormorant, Kingfisher ,Thrushes, darters, and Black - Necked stork.
