Thrissur or Trichur is considered as Cultural Capital of Kerala, the head quarter town of Thrissur district. The town was constructed during the reign of Raja Rama Verma, the ruler of Cochin. It is named after lord Shiva, notable for many cultural, artistic and academic institutions and home to the several famous temples, churches and palaces. Thrissur has occupied important place in history of the south India, seen ups and downs of several empires. Perumpadappu Swaroopam, Zamorins of Calicut, Portuguese invasion and later British Kingdom, have contributed a lot in making of its rich and culture.

Places of Interest

Vadakkumnathan Temple- It is one of the most prominent temples of Thrissur, dedicated to Lord Shiva. Located in the heart of 'Round, it was constructed in 9th century. Pilgrimages are mesmerized by the superb wood Carvings and rich decorative murals of Temple. The sacred shrine is also known for the Pooram festival, organized in each year in temple premises.

Lourdes Cathedral- Owing to a colony of Dutch and British invaders, Thrissur has some beautiful churches such as the Lourdes Cathedral. The exterior wall of the church is painted in pink spires and attracts thousand of tourist from all over the world. During the historic visit of Pope John Paul II to the city in 1986, the church had organized The Centenary of Our Lady of Lourdes festival.

Sakthan Thampuram Palace- It is one of the finest examples of Dutch and Keralian style of architecture and reflects several interesting and outstanding aspects of the former rulers of Cochin. It has remained a college of Chinmaya Mission of Swami Chinmayananda for long time before the Archeological survey of India has converted it into a museum. At present it is notable for various household objects, artifacts and megalithic items.

Kerala Kala Mandalam- Thrissur is regarded as Cultural capital of Kerala and home to Kerala Kala Mandalam which offers training in performing arts such as Kathakali, Mohiniyattam, Koodiyattam etc. It was established by famous poet Vallathol Narayan Menon in Cheruthuruthy. Other centre for performing arts includes the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy and Kerala Sahitya Academy.

Punnathur Kotta Elephant Sanctuary- with more than 60 elephants, it is considered as one of the largest shelter for elephants in the world. These elephants are given by devotees of Guruvayurappan. The Elephant Race organized during Feast for Elephants, attracts thousand of wildlife lovers to gods own country, Kerala.

Apart from these places, Mummiyar Temple, Archeological Museum, Shree Krishna temple etc are other attractive places.
